Introduction of Changes to Dance Training: what’s new?

Starting in September 2026, changes embed a fresh approach: The UK Scholars Programme Research. Year 7s are set to benefit from newly-designed associate training centres and a bespoke UK Scholars path—skipping traditional full-time schooling.

Behind the Decision

Emphasizing Student Growth

Crucial in deciding these changes is students’ holistic growth. We’re committed to offering Year 7 and 8 students the best experience in the ballet world, bringing about nurturing environments tailored to the developing needs of our dancers.

Our researchers dove deep, shining light on findings indicating that early specialization in dance may not necessarily align with long-term success. By stepping into the right kind of training at the right time, students gain robust mental resilience, enhanced careers, and consistent success levels.

Balancing Home and Training

Heading to a new boarding setup to train can be daunting. Beyond skills, we’re thinking about students’ psychological needs, ensuring our changes mitigate pressures from being away from home at an early age.

Unraveling Training Models

International and UK Scholars Programme Research

Our forthcoming UK Scholars Programme Research breaks ground in enhancing opportunities. Nationally identified through our Associate Network, exceptional Year 7 students will be able to access unique chances. The initiative blends extra performance insights, residential camps, and personalized coaching.

The Mid Associate Model, launching in tandem with the scholars programme, lays out Ballet Conditioning schemes and weekend repertoires, ensuring a balanced progression towards vocational training.

A Fresh Roadmap: What to Expect

Full-time places once filled by Year 7s and 8s shift to older participants, securing existing student numbers. The focus will gradually turn towards individualized student stages. We are reflecting on whether full-time begins at Year 9 or 10, but while these puzzle pieces move, our dedication remains steady.

Strength of Partnerships

Collaborations That Matter

Tapping into the expertise of the Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet, our new model is framed by seasoned professionals ensuring graduates are not just dancers, but shining all-round individuals.

Supporting Families and Students

Fear not, these improvements aren’t limiting opportunities but repositioning when they come to life. Support systems stand strong, with pastoral and safeguarding teams ready to guide families through these transitions.

Future Steps and Q&A Opportunities

Should you have questions regarding these changes? We’re hosting two Zoom meetings in August 2025, where you can seek insights directly from school leaders. Dive into the nitty-gritty details and discover how these steps affect you and your aspiring dancer.
